In our continued efforts to bring the most advanced technology available to our patients, North Torrance Optometry is proud to offer the Optomap Retinal Exam as an integral part of your eye exam.

The Optomap is used by Dr. Shimazaki and Dr. Mayeda to get an ultra-wide-field view of the retina (the back of the eye) providing a thorough screening of the retina with out dilation. We recommend Optomap as part of your comprehensive eye exam today.
The Optomap ultra-wide digital retinal imaging system helps you and your eye doctor make informed decisions about your eye health and overall well-being. The Optomap works with laser scanning technology to create a high-resolution panoramic picture of your retina. The Optomap is unique because it results in imiages that allow Dr. Shimazaki and Dr. Mayeda a much larger view (200 degrees or up to 82%) of your retina. See a comparison of the 200 degrees field of vision the Optomap offers and the difference in scope here.
The Optomap Retinal Exam provides an eye wellness scan, an in depth view of the retinal layers (where diseases can start) and permits a thorough screening of the retina to verify that your eye is healthy. After the Optomap retinal image is taken Dr. Shimazaki or Dr. Mayeda will spend time with you to review and answer any questions while giving you the ability to view your Optomap retinal image.  The Optomap retinal image will become part of your medical file in our office and can be made available to you or other Doctors so long as you approve disclosure. One of the many benefits for this Optomap retinal image that it is kept as part of your medical file this will allow Dr. Shmazaki or Dr. Mayeda to make comparisons for tracking and diagnosing any change in the health of the retina for the many years to come.
The Optomap Retinal Exam allows us to provide breakthrough technology which images the back of the eye and helps our doctors assess overall eye health as well as detecting early signs not only eye diseases but common health diseases. Proper retinal screening with the Optomap can lead to early detection of common diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.
Optomap facilitates the early detection, management and treatment of eye disorders and diseases evidenced in the retina such as retinal detachments and tears, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, ocular cancer and age-related macular degeneration.

The Optomap story: In 1990, 5 year old Leif Anderson went blind in one eye due to an undetected retinal detachment. He was getting regular eye exams, but conventional tests available at the time made a thorough examination difficult. Distressed by the diagnostic methods available, Leif’s father, Douglas, worked for 10 years to design and perfect the Optomap Retinal Exam.
